NHRC Rejects Social Media Bill, Takes Stand With Nigerians

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has kicked against the Protection from Internet Falsehood and Manipulations Bill, also known as the Social Media Bill which has scaled second reading in the Senate. Kogi West Rerun: Collation Ends As Melaye, Adeyemi Set To Know Fate

The candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Senator Dino Melaye, and that of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Senator Smart Adeyemi, are set to know their fate in the Kogi West senatorial district election. This comes as voting ends in all polling units where a rerun election is taking place in the senatorial zone. The Independent National Election Commission (INEC) conducted the rerun on Saturday after it declared the November 16 poll inconclusive. Although the poll favoured Senator Adeyemi who polled 80,118 votes as against Senator Melaye’s 59,548 votes, INEC said the margin of 20,570 votes between the two candidates was lower than the number of cancelled votes in 53 polling units of the 20 registration. INEC’s decision to conduct a fresh election in the senatorial district was in line with the order of the Court of Appeal in Abuja, which dismissed an appeal filed by Senator Melaye challenging the nullification of his election. Police Arrest Suspected Abductors of Six Kaduna Students, 37 Others

Operatives of the Kaduna state police command have arrested two suspected abductors of six students and two teachers of Engravers College in Chikun local government area of the state. The victims were abducted from their school on October 3 and released on October the 26. However, after almost two months of manhunt of the kidnappers, the Kaduna state police command said it apprehended two members of the gang during an operation in their hideout in the state capital. The command also arrested 37 other suspected kidnappers and armed robbers including a five-man kidnap gang that killed their victims after collecting over two million Naira ransom in Kangimi village of Igabi Local Government Area. The Chairman of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission, Hon Abike Dabiri-Erewa, has expressed satisfaction over the justice meted out to 24-year-old South African police constable, Austin Luciano Reynold that killed a Nigerian, Ebuka Okoli in Durban, Kwa Zulu Natal. Minister of Transportation, Mr Chibuike Amaechi. The Federal Government has announced free train ride for travellers along the Lagos-Ibadan standard gauge rail line. The Minister of Transportation, Mr Chibuike Amaechi, made the announcement on Saturday via his Twitter handle. He explained that the take-off point is the Iju train station in Lagos while the free ride would last beyond the festive period. Amaechi noted that it would run through March 2020. He, therefore, urged commuters along the route to take advantage and “ride to the next level”. Eight Children Among 15 Civilians Killed By Mine In Afghanistan – Govt

Fifteen civilians, including eight children, were killed Wednesday when their vehicle hit a land mine in Kunduz province in northern Afghanistan, a government official said. “At around 5:00 pm this evening a mine planted by the Taliban terrorists hit a civilian car… killing 15 civilians and wounding two more,” said Nasrat Rahimi, an interior ministry spokesman. Six women and a man were also among those killed in the blast in Kunduz, on the country’s northern border with Tajikistan, Rahimi said. No group has claimed responsibility for the blast. It was also unclear if it was a targeted attack. However, there are regular clashes in the region between the Taliban insurgents and US-backed Afghan forces. Insurgents attacked the provincial capital, also called Kunduz, in early September, but failed to capture it. The Taliban briefly seized the city in 2015. CBN Governor Godwin Emefiele disclosed this on Tuesday at a meeting with governors of cassava-producing states in Abuja, the nation’s capital. At the event, the apex bank signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Nigeria Cassava Growers Association and Large Scale Cassava Processors. Emefiele explained that the country was blessed with several varieties of cassava that could be explored to optimum potential. Adamawa State Governor, Umaru Fintiri. Adamawa State Governor, Umaru Fintiri, has presented a budget proposal of N183.3 billion for the 2020 fiscal year tagged ‘Budget of Rebirth’. The governor presented the proposal to members of the State House of Assembly on Wednesday at the legislative chamber of the House in Yola, the state capital. He was accompanied by the newly sworn-in members of the State Executive Council and other top government officials. In his presentation, Governor Fintiri explained that education, health, human capital, agriculture, water supply, rural infrastructure, and community development would be given top priority. Civil society groups on Wednesday protested against the proposed Hate Speech Bill, Social Media Bill and also demanded the immediate release of Mr. Omoyele Sowore who has been in the custody of the Department of State Services despite being granted bail by the court. The protest tagged #SayNoToHateSpeechBill took place at the National Assembly gate. The Theatre Commander of Operation Lafiya Dole, Major General Olusegun Adeniy, handed over the detainees to the Borno State Governor, Babagana Umara-Zulum in a ceremony in Maiduguri on Wednesday. Adeniyi said the release is sequel to months of investigation in which the over  900 out of those detained at the military detention centre were found to be innocent. Governor Zulum in response applauded the military for the release and assured that all is set to receive rehabilitation of the former detainees before reuniting them with their families. Nigeria’s recent border closure drill has been linked to the recent rise in headline inflation which is currently at 11.61 per cent as of October 2019. The Minister of Finance, Budget and National Planning, Mrs. Zainab Ahmed, briefed State House Correspondents after the Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting in Abuja, that recent figures from the Nigeria Bureau of Statistics (NBS) were noticed since September.
